Meaning

By Daniel O'Connell

We all need meaning. Depending where we are in our careers, in our lives, meaning takes different forms, has various component parts. Maslow explained this succinctly with his hierarchy of needs.

As brand professionals we spend our workdays researching, understanding and then positioning and promoting. Every day is a challenge to achieve insight into what is uniquely meaningful and a secondary challenge to communicate that insight in a creative and impactful way.

This challenge is not appealing to everyone — nor should it be — but it’s the underlying reason why many of us got into this business; it’s what gets us to work in the morning and drives us home happy at the day’s end.

I believe that to be happy and fulfilled, it’s important for all of us to look for meaning in what we do every day, examine how we live and how we work. It’s not always easy, but the quest itself can be worth it. Get my meaning?
